What is Pakistan Kidney Institute (PKI) and its relationship with PKLI?

Pakistan Kidney Institute is a sister organization of PKLI, which was developed in year 2004 in the premises of Shifa International Islamabad. Apart from taking part in many relief and awareness programs, the institute has developed the best residency program in the country and has treated more than 100,000 patients. However, due to the increasing burden of kidney and liver diseases in the country, the institute is now being expanded to Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute & Research Center.  
   
What is the need of such an institution in Pakistan?

Approximately 40% of all the diseases in Pakistan have kidney, bladder, and liver related origin. According to WHO, diseases related to the liver is the 11th leading cause of deaths in Pakistan with kidney diseases on number 12. The menace of Hepatitis B and C has turned into an epidemic in Pakistan. The country has the highest prevalence of Hepatitis C in the world after Egypt. The treatment of such diseases is either too expensive in the country or at times not available resulting in loss of innumerable precious lives. PKLI aims to put an end to this misery by providing state of the art, free of cost ingenious treatment, especially to the poor of the country.   
   
How does PKLI aim to curb the spread of these diseases?

Disease prevention and awareness programs are one of the main objectives of PKLI. The institute aims to curtail the existing burden of diseases through treatment, relief programs, awareness programs and preventive programs by dedicating required amount of funds to these heads.   
   
What will the project offer to the people of Pakistan?

Apart from treatment and prevention, the hospital aims to impart world class education and training to the future doctors in the country. The hospital construction and operations will be a source of employment for some 5000 labor and their families. As the project is being built on JCI standards, it will be a benchmark in the health care sector of Pakistan for others to follow.  
   
What does the Hospital Complex constitute of?

The Hospital Complex is being built on a 50 acre land and will consist of hospital buildings (patient towers, emergency theaters, operation theaters, etc.), University, Mosque, Energy Center, Nursery, Male and Female Dormitories,  Residential Area, PKLI Bazaar and Industrial Unit.  
   
What are JCI standards that PKLI will implement?

Joint Commission International (JCI) are gold standards in the areas of patient safety and health care and are being implemented by the best hospitals in the world. Unfortunately, no hospital or design consultant in Pakistan has ever implemented these standards before. PKLI will be the first hospital to have JCI Certification.  
   
What is the role of Government of the Punjab in the execution of PKLI?

As PKLI is a Public-Private Partnership between the Government of the Punjab (GOP) and PKLI, the GOP has allocated a 50 acre land in Lahore Knowledge City and is funding the entire construction of the hospital and its operating cost for the first three years. After that the GOP will cover 25% annual operating cost and the rest will be covered through donations.  
   
When will the Hospital construction complete?

The construction of the hospital complex is divided into phases and the first phase of hospital, consisting of 200 beds, is scheduled to be completed in August 2017, followed by the completion of phase 2, consisting of 550 beds, in March 2018 and phase 3, the complete hospital by end of year 2018.
