About
Infection Prevention & Control

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) is a major challenge for healthcare settings around the world. It is important that no one gets infected while receiving health care. The prevention and control of infection falls under the Joint commission international (JCI) standards on patient safety. It is crucial that employees recognize, follow, and implement the correct procedures to prevent or control infection, particularly with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. This basic IPC course provides you with the core content you need to ensure you are equipped to prevent and limit the spread of infection and illness in the workplace and understand the importance of maintaining hygiene standards at work. The training course has been designed to provide maximum learning potential in the time-efficient manner. It has been produced in high-quality video format, which is accessible on any device, anytime, anywhere.

A good quality healthcare system is based on the principle of: “Do No Harm”. It is well recognized that infections acquired from healthcare settings are of a huge concern for all countries, and can affect patients, healthcare workers (HCWs), and visitors. It has been estimated that, at any given time, over 1.4 million patients worldwide suffer from infections acquired in healthcare facilities (HCFs). The risk of acquiring healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in low and middle-income countries is 2 to 20 times higher than in high-income countries.
In addition to HAIs, there are recent records of the emergence and re-emergence of new and novel infections like (COVID 19, MERS, Ebola, H1N1 etc.), and multi-drug resistant microorganisms (MDROs) e.g. XDR Salmonella, Carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative, XDR-tuberculosis, and so on.
The global increase in HAIs and outbreaks and the emergence and re-emergence of life-threatening infections have highlighted the need for an efficient IPC program in all healthcare facilities. This has necessitated the commitment of the senior management and trained IPC practitioners in Pakistan, towards providing technical expertise and capacity building for the effective implementation of these programs. The programs were not only to prevent HAIs but to also help in controlling the spread of communicable diseases and MDROs. The effective implementation of IPC, in turn, safeguards HCWs, visitors and the community at large. Therefore, it is imperative for all healthcare administrators to ensure strict implementation of the IPC in their healthcare facilities along with the provision of adequate resources and support. PKLI has a robust IPC program running which has resulted in infection rates below the international benchmarks of IPC. This video-based IPC course develop by our IPC department is first ever course develop in Pakistan for health care workers. This will be available on PKLI website (LMS system) and will be open for other health care institutes also.
I congratulate the IPC team for their effort.

In developing countries like ours, healthcare associated infections are rampant causing high mortality and morbidity. Infection Prevention and Control Standards provide a framework to plan, implement, and evaluate an effective IPC program based on evidence and best practices in the field. The literature shows that well-designed IPC programs are cost- effective because they reduce health care associated infections, shorten the length of hospital stay, and decrease the cost of treating health care associated infections. PKLI is very serious about prevention of infections and providing the highest possible care to its patients. This is not only important for PKLI but should be practiced across Pakistan.
Effective infection prevention and control is central to providing high quality health care for patients and a safe working environment for those that work in healthcare settings. Studies show that nearly one-third of nosocomial infections can be prevented by a well-organized infection control program. Infection control is important to the wellbeing of our patients, and for that reason we have infection control procedures in place. This is a condensed pre-recorded video-based training, introducing the basics of infection control. It is prepared by my team for the benefit of all healthcare providers of PKLI & RC.
