Transplant Immunology, Autoimmune diseases and hypersensitivity disorders
Overview
Dr. Mehjabeen Imam completed her fellowship in Immunology at SIUT in Karachi, where she gained significant expertise in managing primary immunodeficiencies, allergies, autoimmune diseases, as well as in caring for pre- and post-transplant patients. Her responsibilities included interpreting and finalizing CDC crossmatches, flow cytometric crossmatches, HLA typing via SSP PCR, and anti-HLA antibody screening, with a particular focus on identifying suitable renal transplant recipients and donors. Dr. Imam also played a key role in diagnosing viral infections, autoimmune diseases, and monoclonal gammopathy, with a special interest in transplant immunology and quality management systems.
During her three-year tenure as a consultant immunologist at NIBD & BMT Hospital, Dr. Imam collaborated on the passive immunization convalescent plasma donation program for COVID-19 patients. Her work involved managing Primary Immunodeficiency cases and handling complex flow cytometry analyses for hematological and immunological disorders. This included tasks such as immunophenotyping of blood and bone marrow samples for both acute and chronic leukemias, detecting Minimal Residual Disease (MRD), enumerating Stem cells (CD34+ count), performing Donor lymphocyte infusions (CD3+ count), analyzing Lymphocyte subsets, counting Helper T cells (CD4+), conducting platelet glycoprotein analysis, and identifying Leukocyte adhesion defects. Additionally, she was instrumental in developing and finalizing methodologies for testing Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, including both qualitative and quantitative ELISA tests.
